Thom the World Poet - 'Every Coffee Shop Has Ghosts'

Every Coffee Shop Has Ghosts

you remember them - musicians on stage
poets smoking newspapers
lounge lizards sipping strangers
thought balloons in psychic telepathic mode
plugged into each evening's electric grid
in mock acoustic vibe and tone
they do not know you. you are their ghost
every time you return - you see them -
their mannerisms, affectations, turns of phrase
each define them as clearly as auras
you mumble "Banquo!" but no one notices
you are seen stumbling around the furniture
that is newer than you are. you notice
the prices have gone up/clientele changed
you lose dimension and contact - drift off
into a different zone - where they know your name
as some sort of legendary shadow
"O yes - eye was here when she...
"do you remember when they...
"it's not the same since...
you recall yourself saying these self same things
but these folk are talking about you (by name)
and before you change again
it may be time to find another space to hang
like all paintings, sometimes one just has to change...
