Smokescreen
Look away from
That scarring star,
That blinding obvious.
Catch your eye instead on the shadows it casts
Of smoke rising
A die’s outcome is dictated by chance
And like one the wood has been cast
To flame away
Up and out of some chimney
Some where
I can’t see the smoke
But I can see its shadow
Playing and greying
The roof it swims against
An unseen cause still affects
And when the obvious is obscured
Shadow tangles with shadowless -
For now all is gone but the surface
Mostly perhaps you too blankly façade:
Not remembering, yet not quite happy, and
True, I wasn’t there when -
When -
But I see sad in your eyes now.
