Dave Gorman's Googlewhack Adventure review by Jon Andriessen

The Everyman Theatre, Cheltenham

Tuesday, October 8

There is something pleasingly odd about the way Dave Gorman's mind works. Bored with the overpopulated world of 'isn't it funny how...' stand-up routines, Gorman prefers the 'insanely futile project' approach which he presents with a deftly-daft comic genius in his latest venture, Googlewhack Adventure.

For the uninitiated, a Googlewhack is what happens when two words - and no quotation marks - are entered into the Google search engine and only one website is returned. The subsequent author of that website is thus christened a Googlewhack. Devotees of the art form seek out new Googlewhacks and email them to let them know how special they are. And this is what happened to Dave Gorman, an innocent victim of internet absurdity who was unsuspectingly informed that his site contained one and therefore 'he was a Googlewhack.'

His first mistake was to mention this to a friend - whose name incidentally was Dave Gorman and also, as it happens, a Googlewhack. His second mistake was to accept his friend's challenge to find and meet an unbroken chain of ten utterly oblivious Googlewhackers before his 32nd birthday. What follows is one of the weirdest and most wonderful journeys any man can have in pursuit of not growing up whilst growing a beard.

Sadly, Gorman insists on swearing the audience to complete secrecy regarding the show's content, so there's not much more I can tell you except do see the show if you can, or spend the rest of your life not knowing.

To prove how difficult it is, I typed in the words ANODYNE VAMOOSE into Google and received a hefty 19 websites!
